Three things decide the purchase.
The load. What actually has to run, its starting surge, and the voltage and phase at the site. This sets the size range, and it comes before brand. How generator sizing works.
The rating basis. Standby, prime, or continuous. The same physical machine carries different numbers for each, and paying for a standby rating you cannot use continuously is a costly mistake.
The emissions tier. If the generator will run as anything other than emergency standby, its EPA tier affects whether it can be permitted. Read about Tier 2, 3, and 4 Final.

Which diesel generator brand is best?
There is no single answer, and any dealer who gives you one is selling what they have. Cummins and Caterpillar dominate the mid and large industrial range with the best parts support. John Deere is often the value choice from 30 kW to 300 kW. Kohler integrates standby systems well. Generac is strong on value and light commercial standby. What matters more than the badge is the condition and rating of the specific unit.
Does the brand matter more than the size?
No. A correctly sized generator from a second-choice brand will serve you far better than an undersized or oversized unit from your first choice. Get the load right first, then choose among the brands available at that size.
